About

Three generations on one slope.

Our family has worked this vineyard above Sremski Karlovci for as long as anyone remembers. In 2009 we stopped selling the grapes and started making the wine ourselves.

Hands holding a freshly picked bunch of dark grapes

Grandfather planted Graševina and Frankovka in these rows and sold the grapes to the local cooperative. Father restored the old cellar beneath the house and made wine for family and friends. The first bottles labelled Obronak were filled in 2009: 1,800 bottles of Graševina.

Today we farm fourteen hectares and fill around 38,000 bottles a year. We still pick by hand, still taste every tank, and still make every decision at the table in the cellar.

Vineyards

Fourteen hectares, six varieties.

Site

The northern and eastern slopes of Fruška Gora, 180 to 320 metres above sea level, looking out over the Danube.

Soil

Loess and marl over limestone. It drains well and gives the wines their minerality and freshness.

Varieties

Graševina, Tamjanika, Frankovka, Cabernet Sauvignon, Portugieser and Merlot — nothing that does not thrive on the slope.

In the vineyard

Grass between the rows, no herbicides and as little spraying as possible. We keep yields low by green harvesting.

Cellar

Under the house, at 13 °C.

The old cellar from the 1890s has stone walls and a steady temperature in every season. This is where our wines age, in large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques. In 2016 we added a new wing with steel tanks for the whites and rosé.

People

A small team around one table.

The winery is run by its owner and winemaker, with help from the family and some twenty pickers from nearby villages at harvest.

  • Petar Vasić

    Owner

The third generation of the family on the slope. He runs the vineyard and the tastings, and knows every row by name.

  • Mila Jovanović

    Winemaker

Trained in Novi Sad and Bordeaux. She has made our wines since 2016, with as little intervention and as much patience as possible.

Tastings

Taste it where it grows.
